2020 Formula 1 Season Highlights

The 2020 Formula 1 season, was a strange and unusual season, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, that had a major impact on the scheduling, attendance, and overall logistics of the races. However, despite these challenges, the season still featured several exciting moments and highlights:

  • Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won his 7th World Drivers' Championship, equalling Michael Schumacher's record of 7 championships,

  • Mercedes team also won their 7th Constructors' Championship in a row,

  • The 2020 season started in Australia, but following the pandemic, several rounds were either cancelled or postponed

  • Racing returned in July with the Austrian Grand Prix, which was the first of 8 consecutive races held in Europe,

  • The schedule also included two 'triple-headers' where three races were held on consecutive weekends in Austria, Great Britain and Spain,

  • The 2020 season also featured the introduction of a new format for Qualifying called "The Qualifying shootout," this change was short-lived, and removed after the first race.

  • Racing also took place at the Mugello Circuit for the first time since the 1990s, it was the first race held at the circuit since it was rebuilt and opened to the public in 2019

  • The season also saw the return of the Dutch Grand Prix after 35 years of absence, it was held at the Zandvoort Circuit

  • The final race of the 2020 season was held in Abu Dhabi as usual, and Lewis Hamilton secured the World Drivers' Championship title at the Yas Marina Circuit.
